Afiche Soy Cris de Tierra Bomba

I love this film because it talks about the freedom and ability to live your true self. It focuses on a protagonist who identifies as a member of the LGBTIQ+ community, but anyone can relate to Cristian's struggle. It is an internal struggle. From when you don't know what's wrong with you to when you understand why you act in a certain way, in hindsight. We have all acted. Social media are our great ally when it comes to creating a character, an alter ego. We have all tried to put on a mask or hide something about ourselves because of feeling pressure of having to comply with some norm or social expectation or for fear of showing our true selves. Cristian just wants to be himself. In a world that punishes those who don't fit into a so-called “norm” and also discriminates on multiple levels, it can be hard to “just be yourself”, feel free, whole, and fulfilled. You have to find your inner strength and that path is not easy and full of ups and downs. At the end Cristian, with his black wings, invites us to be free and fly. I hope as a director that this film gives you the courage to be who you really want to be.

Director's note

Cristian, an Afro-Colombian millennial from the Caribbean island of Tierra Bomba, must decide whether to continue acting or drop all his masks, and overcome his own fear to live his gender identity freely. Josephine, the director, follows Cristian for seven years across different countries during this quest for freedom.

A Boyhood-like coming-of-age film about a millennial struggling to define their sense of self.
